Practical IT licensing and security advice for UK SMEs

1 May 2026 · David Kirkman

If you're a small business in the UK trying to get your IT licensing under control, you've probably noticed that most advice online is either US-flavoured, vendor-flavoured, or both. We're starting this blog to fill a small but specific gap: practical, UK-focused guidance written by people who actually broker the licensing they're talking about.

What we'll write about

A few rough categories, in roughly the order we'll cover them:

  • Microsoft 365 licensing — the fastest place an SME bleeds money. There are a dozen tier-shuffle moves that save 10-30% on a typical bill and don't downgrade what users get.
  • Cyber security for the rest of us — Cyber Essentials, Cyber Essentials Plus, and how to genuinely meet them rather than tick boxes.
  • Choosing an MSP — the questions you should ask, the contract clauses to insist on, and the red flags.
  • Operational notes from running this business — including transparency about our own licensing margins, how we automate, and what working at an "inclusive employer" actually means in practice.

What we won't do

Vendor takedowns. Affiliate-linked listicles. The kind of generic "10 reasons cloud is good" content that exists only to feed search engines. Every post will be specific enough to be useful and short enough to be read in one coffee.

Comments and feedback

We don't run comments here — keeping a comment system spam-free isn't a good use of a small team. If a post sparks a question, contact us directly; if it's the basis of a good follow-up, we'll write it up.

Thanks for reading. We'll be back regularly.
